Yet another cheap induction pipe setup. (4”)
« on: November 07, 2011, 07:35:15 AM »
So I needed a 4” setup since switching to a holset. Cruising the Lowes this weekend I noticed some solid jointed HVAC 4” tubing. This looked like a nice and easy solution. I then cruised by the washer/Dryer piping section and found the same 4”  jointed metal tubing in a much thinner (flimsy even) alum. Using two sections of the light piping I mocked up the 4” S pipe I needed and used a drop of super glue on each joint to hold it in position. Then Broke out the old fiberglass kit and went to work adding some strength to this pipe. Cost me around $8. I could have taken a little more time and done a nicer glass job, as the resin started to kick midway through the job so I rushed a bit. I’d suggest doing half a side at a time. Used 6oz of resin total. . End result turned out well I think.  Very light and strong.

:clap sir that is a nice little setup you have there reminds me of my old PVC setup that I bought from lowes awhile back.  What kind of filter is that?

I have used PVC in the past as well! It's pretty heavy, and distorted a bit from the heat on one setup. This thing weighs close to nothing.   The filter is just a cheapo knock off surgical cotton deal. (apc maybe?) I believe it was $39 at autozone. I may replace it with a nicer filter, but this one was convenient and I wanted the car done this weekend.

Ingenuity... I like that word. Most use "cheap bastard".    ;D

4" holset turbo.. you could always do what the diesel dudes do... BHAF (big honkin air filter) apparently they steal a couple more hps with a big ass air filter.

I forget if they are 4" OD or ID on the connection.. still haven't bothered to buy mine yet... I forget why

Man I don't know where I'd put that sucker! If I put it right on the turbo inlet it would suck hot radiator air. Nice find though. I was checking out random diesel airfilter boxes in walmart the other night for this same reason. Didn't find one that large though, only 3" inlets as well.

I am about to do this.  I need to get a pipe because I am putting my 20G on hopefully next weekend.  I hope they make a reducer though as the 20G inlit is only like 2.5".  You get the fiberglass resin kit at Lowes, or ace hardware or something?

What kind of paint do you recommend?  Engine?  Caliper?

I'd almost suggest this intake setup on a 20g. If it's the same as the 16g it's only 2".

I haven't seen many 4" to 2" couplers. Doubt you would gain much going with 4" over 3 in that situation. I actually have my old 16g setup above I'd sell you cheap if your interested.

That being said all the home stores carry fiberglass. I used BBQ grill paint. Engine or caliper paint would work fine.

Your 16g should be 2.5" but honestly I really don't know why you would need a 4" intake pipe when you are restricted to a 2.5" turbo inlet but here's a 4" to 2-1/2" from FrozenBoost. I personally run a 3" cold air intake with the 3" to 2.5" reducer & the car makes great power, I order all my reducers & t-bolt clamps from these guys.

I like the idea of the h vac stuff thought because you can customize all the angles.  Standard s shaped intake pipe doesn't work well for me since as a result of the auto transmission I had to modify the short route piping to move it forward.  With the h vac stuff I could manipulate the intake around the IC pipe.
