Boost pressure source for wastegate
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:28:21 PM »
Figured I'd share this as it has been much of help to me and hopefully to others.  Recently my buddy purchased a punishment racing fmic kit.  If any of you have purchased this kit, you know it does not come with a boost source off the j-pipe as the stock pipes do.  Forgetting about this and finding out at 4:30 on a sunday, my buddy and I were sort of in a bind. A quick trip down to ace hardware yielded nothing and although I have a mig welder, I have no aluminum wire.  Got to thinking why I clamp in valve stem would work.  So we run down to advance auto and pick up a pack of 2.  We used a ballpien hammer to slightly flatten the pipe, drill a hole the size of the grommet and clamp it in.  Once all assembled, the valve stem held boost up to 20psi no problem.
I figure the valve stem is designed to hold 200psi and is designed to handle the elements and heat/cold for the life of the tire or longer.
Only real problem I could see is the rubber degrading, but I figure it'd take a while and depending on location may never need to be changed.
For those of you unfirmiliar with the tire world, a clamp in valve stem used a rubber grommet on the inside and a washer and nut on the outside to secure the valve to the wheel.
A quick search at advanceauto.com or autozone.com will yield an example of what I am talking about.
Just thought I'd share my idea with you all. I will be doing this to my talon shortly and my sentra already has it in place, just finishing up the exhaust

neat idea, but why not just drill the compressor housing and but a screw in barb fitting? that is what we use to do to stock rb25det turbos going on a rb20det

I just welded a nipple to the J-pipe I have.  I wouldn't be able to trust a rubber piece, I just wouldn't.

When I had my 14b and went front mount, I noticed that the j pipe didn't have a boost source. So very simple. I drilled and tap a hole on the j pipe. Then screwed in a threaded barb fitting with some jb weld that I bought at the hardware store. A few years later and still holding pressure perfectly.

I've had bad luck with the jb weld. Several weeks later and its still working good. Is there really a good place to tap on the 14b housing?

I'm not sure of the best location, but I ended up putting mine on upper IC a couple feet down from the throttle body.  I figured it would see closer to the pressure the intake sees this way, though now I'm not so sure.

Threaded hose barbs are perfect for this.  If I remember correctly I didn't have the right tap and ended up sealing it with a bit of jb weld.  4-5 years later now :)

mine and many others t off the bov line.  Its a large nipple directly on the intake manifold, and a large rubber hose too so it can carry lots of air and not be pinched off like a wee small one like the fpr line.

I did it that way on my 14b, my -10 and my current turbo.  my current turbo is also externally gated.
