Engine break-in on Jackal
« on: January 08, 2012, 01:35:50 PM »
So I am almost done with my build, and I already have the ostrich, IAT, and MAP sensors.  I was wondering first, do I need to run a seperate logger with Jackal?  I have read a few things saying I do and do not need to.  Also, how about my wideband install, can I put it in the location of the front o2 for now until I get the car to an exhaust shop to get it all welded together?

Okay, now what about my engine break in?  I have a set of 510cc and a set of rc 1000cc injectors, which would be easier to set up on my car?  It has BC 280s and a t3/t4 turbo if it matters.  I have an extra ecu I could hook up to the car that is just a stock non-eprom 92 ecu, and I could run a 2g mas and the 510s, if that would work with the cams, but I have also read that it is better to break the motor in on the setup that it will have on it.  Im just a bit weary on the entire thing, but if someone can point me in the right direction I am positive I can get this thing set up on my own.  Thanks guys, I appreciate all the help!

Jackal has its own logger, you just need a cable to log with.

Wide band can go into the front o2 location but the increased heat will shorten the life of the sensor.

As for breaking the motor in, you want to get it up to temp and break in the rings correctly.  You don't really want to be stalling  the motor and the dealing with tuning when your trying to break it in.  So if it were me I would use something that will start up and run good enough to seat the rings then deal with the fine tuning.

Alright well what I think I will do is run the stock ECU with the 510s and the 2g mas, until the motor is broken in and has a few hundred miles on it, then I will purchase jackal and make the switch up to speed density.  Thanks for your help

Motoman it on something that works.. ie maf. Then get to work tuning it.

Would the engine be easy to break in on Jackal with a SD setup and my 510cc injectors?

The reason I am asking, is because I am now at the point where I am trying to fire my motor and break it in, and I am running a stock ECU/2G MAS/510cc/280BC cams and I cannot get my AFRs in the right area, they keep running really lean, even when I adjust my fuel pressure between 40-80 psi.  I have not let the car get to operating temp yet, as I do not want to damage it running in a lean condition.

Thanks guys!

I'd say the fact that the car has those mods on a stock ecu might be more of your issue. Does it go into closed loop?

I haven't broken my engine in yet, but I will be soon and will face a similar issue. I'll have stock injectors with 264's.

When I first converted my car to SD....keep in mind this was years ago now Hak had a basetune that I used.....I think I remember reading that it was his tune on his 2.3 so he took 30% out of global. Either way I fired the car up made a few small changes to global and the car ran pretty well. Good enough for a break in in my opinion.

I think starting with jackal or werewolf may be easier than trying to get the car in stock running form.

It wasnt going in to closed loops, but I think my problem was because the wideband was hooked up to the front location, but I didnt have the narrowband simulation hooked up.  Im gonna do that today.  Would that cause the AFRs to go off a bit?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions on getting this thing running with these cams?  Jackal or otherwise, I would just like to get the motor idling and running decently so I can start to get this thing broken in.

If anyone has some maps I could look at, that would be sweet too!

Thanks!!
