Voltage output for alternator
« on: March 07, 2013, 07:36:43 PM »
My mechanic thinks my alternator is bad because its only putting out 12v during idle and 11.7 during idle with the headlights on. Please help I just dropped 3500 in parts and labor and still the stupid car is having problems. Dsms suck right now.. :shakefist

Does this seem accurate to anyone?

What is the voltage supposed to be?

Above 12, heat is the enemy though

Could it be a bad fuse doing this?

By above 12 do you mean during load or during idle? Do you mean anything above 12 such as 12.1? I only ask because my car was running at 12-12.1

I like to consider anything above 12.3 as working, since there and below the batteries sulfate..

Usually the only thing about the alternator loosing juice is heat. When the car first starts on a cold morning what is voltage?

That was pretty much on a cold start. I hadn't driven the car for a a while because my mechanic was installing a couple things on it. (When I do the work myself I break it more :/  ) We just got the car up to normal temps to see if it would still overheat (which it didn't).
