The Mysteries of Logging
« on: July 25, 2011, 10:40:25 AM »
First off, my logging cable is set up as follows:

OBD1 to Serial cable (with the 10k resister and diode) -> Null Modem Adapter -> Keyspan Serial to USB Converter

My problem (more of an annoyance  :wacko ) is that the logging "mysteriously" works sometimes and other times it doesn't. Sequence of events: Turn laptop on, plug Ostrich in and wait 10 seconds, plug keyspan in (the entire cable is always connected to OBD1 port) and wait 10 seconds, start Jackal wait for it to finish initialization, and then click on switch to logger, pick COM3, turn on IAT and TPS logging and click poll, HOPE IT WORKS, then cry if it doesn't and repeat everything all over. If it starts working, it will work great until Jackal is restarted or the keyspan is unplugged/plugged back in. Most times it takes around 5 cycles of unplugging/replugging the keyspan and re-starting Jackal, which gets annoying when you have to go through it every time you want to hop in the car and drive somewhere with the logger doing its thing so you can check the logs later.

So, my question is, how should I go about diagnosing what makes it magically work? Sometimes COM3 doesn't even show up in the list of ports, but every time it is there, if poll is clicked the little spinning thing spins and no errors come up, just no values are shown for the sensors.

Thanks,
Ruebs

The rxtx library is a huge pain. I may drop it completely now that jssc has some basic linux support.

In any event, do you have any softwares running that might possibly prevent access to the serial ports ? PalmOne ? Maybe windows gay firewall ? Perhaps TMO ? Palm Emulator ?

I had a similarly annoying problem getting my logger set up. The keyspan was junk. Does your laptop have a serial port you can plug the null modem into? My old pos did. That would at least cross one thing off the list.

Is the cabled pinched anywhere?

Have you tried another laptop with your set up?

Just throwing ideas out there.

I am using windoze (for now at least) so I will try disabling the firewall, I am not using any of the other programs you mentioned.

No serial ports on either of the two laptop/netbook I tried (one is Win Vista the other Win 7). Cable isn't pinched and it works FLAWLESSLY with my palm. Also tried two Keyspans (one BRAND new).

So, I guess I will try turning off windows firewall as my last remaining option? Otherwise I will just have to live with the  :deadhorse of retrying it over and over until it works...  :yucky

Once jssc goes stable linux, I will most likely abandon rxtx on jackal, since werewolf is already using jssc.

Is the null modem bad? I know theres not much too it, but if it works on the palm but not on the two pc's. Just a thought.

Using two different null modems as well (both new). And it DOES work on both PC's, just gotta keep restarting Jackal and unplugging the cable until it works.

Found something crazy in the OBD1 to Serial cable though. I was building a cable for myself since I didn't have one yet (the reason I have two laptops with Jackal, two Keyspans, two null modems, and two Ostriches is because one set is my buddy's) and it wasn't working. So, I took apart my buddy's cable to see why the new one I was making wouldn't work and found that it had not only the diode and 10k resistor, but TWO more 10k resistors and ANOTHER diode as well as a TRANSISTOR!  :willynilly

Anyways, I got my cable working (dyslexicaly read the circuit diagram) but haven't tried it with jackal yet (just got a new battery for my netbook, and now the hard drive seems to be dying  :shit storm ). On top of that, my PCV valve is leaking boost hardcore (which I hope is causing the valve cover oil leak since the gasket is brand new) and my RPM's spike up from 4-6k like the clutch is slipping. So, who knows when I will get a chance to test the new cable with Jackal...  :(

Thanks,
Ruebs

So I tried out the new cable I made, and so far it has worked the first time every time!  :clap :clap :clap
