jackal logging DIY set up for 1g dsm
« on: January 31, 2011, 09:36:44 PM »

first make your ALDL to serial cable using a female db9 connector, (1) 1N914 diode, (1) 10k resistor.

find ALDL plug under dash next to fuse box and locate pins 1, 10, and 12 to plug in wire harness you just made.

After pluging in wire harness to ALDL you will need to attach a null modem connector to db9 connector.  This connector switches the #2 & #3 pins on the db9 connector.  NOTE: you do not need to use null modem connector when using loggers such as pocket logger, mmsd on your palm or pda.

The next thing you need to do is purchase a keyspan usb to serial adapter.  This will allow you to connect your laptop to your ALDL port to log with jackal

Your finished product should look similar to this.

Thanks for the info.
But once You've connected everything, what settings do You have to set on Jackal?
Greetings from Europe!

You would just need to pick the same com port that is being showed for the keyspan adapter.

not all usb converters are made equal.

Link has a list somewhere on their wiki of working usb converters.

If you just switch pins 2&3 in your schematic, you will not need the null modem adapter to connect with a PC.  Of course you would then need to use one for a Palm logger but who cares.

I did try two other types that worked with tuner pro and the gen 2 maft translator before reading that the only ones that work with jackal are keyspan. There is a special chip set that keyspan uses.

Great info! I have tried many times to connect ty my PC, but with no luck. So I realized that the serial out is the same as seral out on the computer and some sort of cross over cable will be needed. I got a cable that in your scheme should be in the place of the null modem connector. Do you think it will work because there are other pins that are moved. Here is how the cable converts the pins:

2:3
3:2
4:6

Why even bother with a null modem adapter?  If you are building the cable for use only on your computer, just manually switch pins 2 and 3 before assembly.

I'm still confused on what your trying to do exactly Alpha.

If your making a cable for your computer. You would be better off soldering it and swapping the pins yourself. You only need realistically 3 pins for the whole thing.

I usually solder the diode to pin 2 and 3 (loop it around its got enough length), and then solder a hook wire on it.

I am trying to log using my laptop.

Currently I am logging using a Palm and MMCD Logger because all my efforts to connect my laptop to the ECU gave negative result. I have a laptop with a com port on it (don't know if it's RS232) and also I have a USB to RS232 adapter but none of them worked. So the missing link was the null modem cable. I got a cable (described above) but haven't tested it. It is actualy a type of a null modem cable, but I wanted to know if it will work or I should get something else that only switches pin 2 and 3.

The above should work, it switches rx and tx, ground stays the same. Which is all the pins we actually use. There is no handshaking with the ecu.

the reason I choose not to switch pins 2&3 is because I still use my pocket logger program to do diagnostic checks and clear codes if needed.  I could switch pins but when I go to use the pocket logger program I again will need the null modem connector.  So....damned if you do, damned if you don't

Yeah, the best way is what you have described in OP. And there is another system being developed. BLUETOOTH! $100 is pricey although it looks promising. But then again just imagine wireless logging using it and wireless tuning using Ostrich bluetooth module! And hopefully Java VM will develop Android environment that could be run on your android phone. Just imagine it! Man you could do it all using your phone and no cables involved. How cool is that?
