2G Head on a 1G
« on: February 04, 2011, 08:49:06 AM »
Alright, I see more than a few of you 1G guys with 2G small port heads on your 1G DSM's, and I'm curious how you like it.  I scored a freshly rebuilt 2g head, resurfaced, 0 miles, all that great stuff for $37, and I couldn't pass it up.  I know that the 2G head flows more stock than even a fully ported 1G head, and plus it's a brand new head for $37.  :P

So basically, I know I'm going to have to bore the head stud/bolt holes in the head 1mm over for my 6 bolt studs, and I'm definitely going to get the intake ports port matched for my Cyclone, but am I forgetting anything?  I'm sticking with the 1G Green top CAS and stock 1G M/T Cams until I get back from NC and then I'm gonna go with some Delta regrinds.

So basically, this is a "How did you like swapping from a 6 bolt head to a 2G head and am I forgetting anything that needs to be done to bolt it onto my 6 bolt" thread.

It's not that the 2g head flows more, the ports are shaped so that they flow better (increased intake velocity) so you port matching the cyclone head would most likely ruin how the 2g head flows because you are just putting it back to how the 1g port was shaped, but its up to you. I would just get either a 2g intake manifold or an evo III intake manifold or upgrade completely to a sheet metal intake manifold. You are right about enlarging the head stud holes though.

Porting the intake ports completely defeats the point of having a 2g head.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't port the intake ports.

Luis is right, the smaller intake ports are supposed to equate to higher velocity, higher velocity means more efficient filling of the cylinder.  Every Evo since the Evo 3 has had the small intake ports...there is a reason for that...

Ah okay guys, thanks.  I'll save the 2G head for my G4CS build.  I'll throw a 2G SMIM on it.   Or I might sell it, still not sure.  I really..really like my Cyclone, but I love the thought of an Evo 3 IM too.  Ah well, either way I'll make some money, or some power.

Thanks for the info, guys!

No prob man.  I just ask that you sell it before you port it.  Shoot I would be willing to trade you a 1g head for a 2g head inf you want the big intake ports that bad ha ha.

Hahahaa, no worries man.  I'm not going to port it.  Realistically I was never going to port it anyway, but I wanted to check just to see if I could.  I might honestly sell this 2G head, because I still need a good exhaust manifold and 02 housing.  I dunno, we'll see if anyone ever offers a trade or to buy it.

I don't have an Evo 3, but I'll trade you my spare 2G head in mint condition for your 20G.   :P

Can anyone remember how big the head stud holes on a 2G head need to be drilled out to in order to run on a 6 bolt block?  1/2"?
