2G head...Differences
« on: February 20, 2011, 04:10:06 PM »
OK, I have heads from a 99 GSX (G6S) and a 95 TSi (G6K).  The only noticeable design difference I saw was the little hex head plugs for the oil passages.  On the side opposite the cam gears, they both have 4 plugs.  On the cam gear side though, the 99 head has no plugs but the 95 head has 4 plugs.  That's about the biggest difference I see right now.  Here are pics comparing the two heads.

1991 Eagle Talon TSi AWD-Ross 8:3.1 pistons, Eagle rods, ACL Race bearings, 2g small port head, HKS/Delta 272 cams, Evo springs/retainers, FP3065 @ 28psi (hopefully), FIC 1550's, Apex'i N1 turbo back exhaust, KYB GR-2's on Suspension Technnique springs, megan sturt bars, poly mounts/bushings

Well I'm not entirely 100% into metalurgy at this point in time, (i do day dream of actually becoming a blacksmith some day), but I would think that the holes, that have plugs, were for casting differences. They look like they align for the lifters, so I'm not sure what may be different. Maybe for deburring later ? who knows.

We may not be able to see the insides, I would assume something is quite different on the inside, usually new is better.

Looks like some weight savings possibly on the intake differences (one looked like it was webbed more).

One thing I can't see from here, is if either heads have provisions for EGR. I know that the EGR takes up space on the heads, and it does cause cooling problems for that cylinder. Something to be aware of I don't know if any there is any heads without EGR provisions.

What do you mean by "webbed?"

webbing, you know the stuff between things that serves no purpose but possibly strengthening.

The hex plugs are clean out plugs for the oil passages that supply oil to the cams and lash adjusters. I cant tell by the pics for sure but it appears the 99 head uses drive in plugs. This is strange cause my head is a 99 and it had the Allen plugs on the thermostat housing side also nothing on the timing side.

Yeah, that's how these are.  The 97 head has no allen heads on the side opposite the thermo housing.  the 95 head has allen heads on both sides.

If you got time, do a intake/ intake and exhaust / exhaust comparison pictures. Aaaaand weigh them.
