Grounding your electronics
« on: January 28, 2011, 09:17:13 AM »
So after I installed my Innovate Motorsports LC-1 wideband I was having issues with it reading AFR. After reading a little of Innovate forums, I found bad grounding can cause major issues.

Quote from: Innovate Motorsports
In wiring the electrical system in a car the best way is to run separate ground wires from each system to a common ground point. The common ground point should NOT be just a bolt where lugs from each device are stacked in top of each other. The contact patches between the lugs create their own resistance and ground problems. The very best way is to bolt a short piece of copper bar near the battery to the frame. Connect the copper bar to the battery with a heavy duty ground strap. Drill and tap the bar for each ground return

http://innovatemotorsports.com/resources/electrical-grounding.php

One of there forum user post this as their copper bar, a distribution block and they said they had Dead accurate readings in my datalogger without having to play with any voltage or lambda offsets.

Yesterday I installed a 8 gauge wire from the ECU ground to my distribution block, Now my LC-1 with DB gauge/LED, GReddy gauges, Autometer Gauges and headunit are now grounded to my distribution block. I'm currently working on a 12 volt ACC power distribution block.

Where did you have it grounded before? I just grounded to one of the computer grounds like the install said for the LC1 and i have not had any problems yet....

Computer grounds? Anyway I ground it to the bare metal frame in the center console.

^^That's where I have my LC1 and my radio grounded to.  Works fine for me.

I do believe I have my JAW grounded to a cpu ground and have no problems other than the initial free air calibration which anyone who has a JAW will tell you, sucks to set up. Been working flawlessly since and I run my wideband 24/7 although the talon sees about 200 miles a month
In order to make this work, I have to change 2 things;  one of them is the Laws of Physics.  Dammit..

1992 tsi awd, Jackal, JAW, FMIC, 680cc, 3 inch turbo back, 255 walbro, comp clutch and lightweight flywheel,  aem truboost, cyclone manifold.

Passenger side of the center console...below the radio at the carpet. I'm sure you've seen it when you remove the ecu.

Yup.  Thats where I grounded my LC-1 setup on my last car.

Would ground somewhere on the engine block be a better idea?
