90 eprom in 91
« on: January 24, 2013, 12:52:42 PM »
Ok so I have search around and found on the vfaqs, that you can run 91 eprom in a 90 dsm by switching to pin 6 (idle position switch) with pin 14 (idle switch). Well I have a 90 eprom and I figured that I could run it in my 91 talon if I reverse this process.

While in the process of pulling the ecu out, it seem like the previous owner might of tired the same thing due to wires being cut and black taped. Now before I tired this mod, the car ran ok with no CEL on, however afterwards I ran into problems. 1st the CEL came on within seconds of running the car, and than it seem to be running extra rich.

Either which way, I put the wires back to stock along with ecu. The car is running back like it should, but now the CEL is still on. So here I am looking for input on this issue along with an opinion. I have a guy who can chip and re-cap the 90 eprom, but i would like to know is it in my best interests.  Should I re try to wire it again, or just find a 91 eprom.

thanks

Reset the code by pulling the battery positive cable off for a few moments.

It should work in revers.

Generally people get confused on the pinouts.

Remember thats facing the back. Seen lots of dudes try to wire a wideband and end up doing the knock sensor instead.

You can run a 90 ecu in your 91+ car, I've been running an old 90 ecu in my car for the past 3 years.  You were right about the wiring, pins 6 and 14 are all that needs to be swapped.  It sounds like your harness may have been molested at one point or another, so you may want to figure out what's going on with that first.

good to know  ;)

So here a dumb question for you guys. I should of ask the guy whom is doing my ecu mod, but it just crossed my mind. When he makes it to have a re-writable chip, can I run the factory chip until I'm ready to get all the hardware to run the Werewolf

As long as its socketed you can put anything in it, including the stock chip back. Just make sure its facing the right direction.

What is he going to use? sf27 ?

I'm not sure, and truthfully I don't know what a sf27 is. I'm assuming it's the type of chip socket needed

It is an actual chip type, not socket type.

The way the ECU reads RPM is different as well.  If you look at the coil pack of a 90 and compare it to a 91-94, you will see they are different.  When I ran a 92 ECU in my 90, I had to switch pins 6 and 14, and also wired in a signal converter.

This is the one I got years ago, but it is for a 91+ ECU in a 90.  I am not sure if it is as simple as just doing everything reverse or not, but here is this info anyway.
